Size | Width: 1200px (Flexible Height) REALease is an interactive audiovisual installation that explores emotional expression, behavioral reinforcement, and the cyclical nature of desire, using the cultural practice of “animal release” (放生) as a metaphor. The project combines real-time interaction and experimental video to create a reflective space for audiences to engage both emotionally and intellectually.
Interaction DesignDeveloped with TouchDesigner and MediaPipe GPU, the system integrates facial recognition, eye tracking, gesture detection, and object tracking. By capturing the viewer's facial expressions and body movements in real time, the system generates responsive visual and audio feedback, visualizing the audience’s emotional states and creating an immersive interactive experience.
Video DesignThe video component metaphorically critiques the consumerist underpinnings of ritualistic animal release. Symbolic imagery such as chanting lips, rotating prayer beads, and gasping fish evoke themes of spiritual desire, control, and environmental impact. Through montage techniques, the film weaves together disconnected yet thematically linked visuals to provoke reflection on the contradiction between outward piety and inner greed. Black-and-white sequences strip away emotional color cues, focusing attention on texture, form, and rhythm.
Motion & Visual Design HighlightsKinetic Typography: Text behaves like living organisms, mimicking the motion of swimming fish. The fluid movement of letters symbolizes the fragile vitality of released animals and the performative nature of ritual.
Mobius Strip Visualization: Representing infinite cycles and spiritual paradoxes, the animated Mobius strip and dynamic prayer bead motifs suggest a loop of desire, release, and control—raising questions about the boundaries between belief, ego, and nature.
REALease invites audiences into a multisensory, meditative experience where technology, ritual, and emotion intersect to question the authenticity of human intention and the consequences of spiritual consumption.
